Wiley Elects Jon Burd as Next Managing Partner

January 20, 2026

Washington, DC – Wiley announced today that the firm has elected Jon W. Burd as its next Managing Partner, effective January 1, 2027. He will succeed Peter D. Shields, who has served in the role since 2012 and who will retire from the partnership on December 31, 2026, following a distinguished career and a planned transition that positions the firm for its next phase of strategic growth.

“I am honored to step into this role at Wiley, a firm clients trust for its depth of experience and collaborative approach to complex, Washington-centered matters,” said Burd. “Under Peter’s leadership, Wiley has reinforced a consistent, client-focused way of practicing. My priority is to build on that foundation as Wiley continues to grow and adapt in ways that enhance our exceptional client service and support the work of our lawyers.”

“Leading Wiley has been an honor, and I am grateful for the shared commitment that has further strengthened our firm each year,” added Shields. “Jon embodies the values and judgment that define this firm. This is a natural, deliberate transition that aligns with Wiley’s long-term strategic vision and positions the firm for continued growth and success grounded in collaboration, integrity, and client service. I am proud of the work we have done together, and confident in the firm’s direction going forward.”

Burd joined Wiley in 2006 and became a partner in 2013. A long-standing leader within the firm, he serves on the Management Committee, recently led the Strategic Growth Committee, and served as Hiring Partner for many years. Recognized by Chambers USA, Burd is a highly regarded government contracts attorney whose work on complex procurement litigation, sensitive investigations, and high-stakes national security matters has established him as a trusted authority in the field. He previously served as President of the Court of Federal Claims Bar Association.

During his 14-year tenure, Shields has strengthened the firm’s capabilities to support clients navigating the most challenging regulatory, enforcement, and litigation matters, ensuring the firm’s practices evolved with a rapidly changing legal environment. He also advanced several firmwide initiatives to enhance Wiley’s platform and market presence, including appointing the firm’s first Pro Bono Partner, leading the  relocation to 2050 M Street, and introducing a modernized brand identity. A partner in Wiley’s Telecom, Media & Technology (TMT) Practice since 1997, Shields has maintained a strong presence in the communications field, having served as President of the Federal Communications Bar Association, and has been active in the Washington, DC community through his service with several nonprofit organizations, including serving as longtime Chairman of the Board of N Street Village.

“From its beginning, in 1983, Wiley Rein has been renowned for its people and the work we do for clients,” said Richard E. Wiley, Chairman Emeritus and co-founder of the firm. “During his exemplary tenure, Peter has guided us through a period of tremendous growth and success while maintaining our core identity as a leading DC law firm. Jon is exceptionally qualified to move us forward in support of a long-term vision for the firm.”
