Ian Barlow Appears on DC News Now to Discuss AI-Driven Pricing Practices

DC News Now
July 10, 2026

Ian L. Barlow, of counsel in Wiley's FTC and Consumer Protection Practice, appeared on DC News Now in its "Stretch Your Dollar" segment, "AI is changing how companies set prices. Here's what shoppers should know," to discuss the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) and consumer data in pricing decisions.

Barlow, a former senior Federal Trade Commission (FTC) official, explained the distinctions between dynamic and personalized pricing, noting that companies face legal and regulatory risks when their use of consumer data diverges from their disclosures to consumers. "If you're using data in a way that contradicts what you've told your customers, that can always get you into trouble," he said.

Barlow also discussed regulators' growing scrutiny of pricing practices involving consumer data, particularly in industries that affect consumers' everyday lives.
