Wiley Rein's Kathleen Kirby Discusses Cameras in State Courtrooms in Boston Herald Article

Kathleen Kirby, co-chair of Wiley Rein's Media Group, was quoted in a February 12 article focused on the growing transparency in state courts by allowing cameras inside the courtroom.  While the majority of states have rules that allow cameras inside their courtrooms to cover judicial proceedings, the level of openness varies from state to state. Ms. Kirby-who serves as general counsel for the Radio Television Digital News Association-says increased access for electronic journalists to cover state proceedings evidences a "slow and steady trend on the part of states to at least engage in experiments with cameras in the courtroom."

While laws allowing cameras in courtrooms are generally already in place in all of the states, there is no guarantee of actually getting a camera in the courtroom. "Lots of states say they permit cameras," Ms. Kirby explained, "but there are a lot of barriers. Usually. . . the impetus is on the advocates of openness."
