Committed to Diversity and Inclusion, Invested in Access to Justice
April 30, 2019

Washington, DC — Wiley Rein LLP announced today that partner Charles C. (Charlie) Lemley has been nominated for President-Elect of the District of Columbia Bar. If elected, he would serve as President-Elect for the 2019-2020 term, and as President for the 2020-2021 term. Online voting begins today and runs through May 24.

Mr. Lemley’s top priorities include fostering diversity, inclusion, and advancement within the D.C. legal community; expanding access to legal services for individuals of limited or no means; and enhancing opportunities for small firms and solo practitioners.

“As D.C. Bar President-Elect, I will bring unique perspectives, knowledge, and experience that will enable me to work with the voluntary bars, legal services providers, and Bar members to further our mutual missions,” he said.

Mr. Lemley has served as a member of the D.C. Bar Litigation Section Steering Committee, and as chair of the Limited Scope Working Group – a joint project of the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Committee and the D.C. Access to Justice Commission. The Working Group was awarded D.C. Bar Project of the Year for recommending changes to court rules and to the D.C. Rules of Professional Conduct to facilitate limited-scope representation.

He also served for eight years as co-chair and chair of Wiley Rein’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. In that role, he helped to expand the firm’s relationships with law schools and minority bar associations, and increase opportunities for diverse attorneys. He has also been an adjunct professor at George Mason University Antonin Scalia Law School since 2002, and a mock trial coach at Georgetown University Law Center for more than 15 years.

“I have served the legal profession through teaching, coaching and mentoring, pro bono representations, initiatives to foster diversity, inclusion, and advancement, and service to the D.C. Bar,” said Mr. Lemley. “As President-Elect, I will lead by listening and learning from others, working together to strengthen the legal profession, expand diversity and inclusion, provide greater access to justice for individuals who cannot afford legal counsel, and serve the needs of small law firms and solo practitioners.”

A partner in the firm’s Insurance and Litigation practices, Mr. Lemley is known for his work in civil litigation matters, primarily in the areas of professional liability coverage and malpractice litigation in federal and state courts. He also represents and counsels attorneys and small law firms in ethics matters and investigations.

He received his J.D., magna cum laude, from Georgetown University Law Center, and his B.A., summa cum laude, from the University of North Florida.
