FTC Expands Its COPPA Rulemaking Proposals
August 2012
On August 1, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced further proposed regulations as part of its ongoing rulemaking under the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Comments on the new proposals were due September 10 but the FTC has extended the deadline until September 24.
With the stated intent of clarifying responsibilities under COPPA and strengthening the protection given to children's personal information, the Commission proposes to amend the definitions of "operator," "website or online service directed to children," and "personal information." Details of the troubling proposals can be found here.
