Wiley Rein’s Eric Wang Weighs In On Wisconsin Campaign Finance Law on Wisconsin Public Radio
Eric Wang, special counsel in Wiley Rein’s Election Law & Government Ethics Practice, was a featured guest during a November 17 segment of Wisconsin Public Radio’s Central Time, discussing a bill passed by the Wisconsin legislature that would establish more clarity in the state’s campaign finance laws. Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker is expected to sign the bill.
“I think there is an expectation or an understanding that state legislators may talk to citizen advocacy groups about the issues they care about,” Mr. Wang said on the program about the bright-line distinction the bill draws between issue advocacy and election advocacy, and the coordination of such activities with elected officials. “Abortion rights groups will want to talk to legislators who are sympathetic to their cause; pro-life groups will want to talk to pro-life legislators. When state legislators and those interest groups want to coordinate with regards to public education campaigns or public awareness campaigns, they should be entitled to do so and they are under the U.S. Constitution and the First Amendment.”
