Jan Baran Discusses Whether Payment to Stormy Daniels Was a Campaign Expense
Jan Witold Baran, co-chair of Wiley Rein’s Election Law & Government Ethics Practice, weighed in with NPR, The Washington Post, USA Today, and ABC News about whether a 2016 payment to Stormy Daniels – who once alleged she had an affair with President Trump in 2006 – is subject to campaign finance laws.
President Trump’s personal attorney said in a statement this week that he had used his own personal funds to arrange the payment, and that the payment had no connection to President Trump, the Trump Organization, or the Trump campaign.
The attorney’s statement “confirms that this transaction, this episode, was private, personal, and in no way directly related with the campaign to the point of triggering campaign finance laws,” Mr. Baran said in a February 14 inteview with NPR’s “All Things Considered.”
