Jan Baran Comments on Prevalence of Illegal Straw Donations in Law Firms
Jan Witold Baran, co-chair of Wiley Rein’s Election Law & Government Ethics Practice, was quoted in a November 1 Law.com article regarding the investigation of a Boston law firm alleged to have reimbursed partners for political contributions. This type of arrangement is generally considered illegal since it can obscure the true source of a donation to a political candidate, according to the article.
Mr. Baran said claims of unethical activity related to campaign finance tend to arise during every election cycle—and law firms can sometimes be at the center of such cases, particularly those that involve Federal Election Commission investigations.
“They’re not common and there are not tons of them, but there’s a fair number of them,” said Mr. Baran. “There’s history of lawyers, unfortunately, being involved.”
