Jan Baran Comments on Office of Congressional Ethics and Its Role in Congress

Jan Witold Baran, co-chair of Wiley Rein’s Election Law & Government Ethics Practice, was quoted in a Q&A article in The Wall Street Journal on January 3, providing an overview of the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) and the role it plays in Congress.  The OCE was recently the subject of scrutiny by House Republicans until a fierce public response forced the congressmen to withdrawal their efforts at reforming the body.  Many ethics experts believe that the OCE has not strengthened Congress’s ability to identify and reign in unethical behavior.

“It’s been a good thing for ethics lawyers in Washington, D.C., but on [the] whole it doesn’t seem to create more results through the ethics process,” said Mr. Baran.
