Wiley Rein’s Jan Baran Comments on Impact of Spending by Super PACs
Jan Baran, co-chair of Wiley Rein’s Election Law & Government Ethics Practice, was quoted by The Wall Street Journal in a November 6 story about the impact of political spending by outside groups in the 2012 election.
While Super PACs and other interest groups on both sides of the political aisle spent record amounts on the presidential and congressional races, it’s unclear whether that spending made much difference, The Journal reported.
President Obama won re-election even though the main Super PAC backing him spent far less than those favoring Republican Mitt Romney. Republicans failed to win a Senate majority, despite the millions of dollars spent by interest groups on television ads assailing Democratic candidates. Democrats fell far short of a House majority despite aggressive campaigns by groups that supported them, according to the report.
“You can spend tons of money on dog-food advertising, but it does no good if the dogs don’t like the food,” Mr. Baran told The Journal. “Money does not guarantee political success.”
