Wiley Rein's Jan Baran Comments on Super PACs
Jan Baran, co-chair of Wiley Rein's Election Law & Government Ethics Practice, was interviewed by Roll Call for a story on Super PACs, the controversial independent expenditure committees that can raise and spend unlimited money to support or oppose political candidates as long as they do not directly coordinate with the campaign.
The article reports that a former fundraising aide for Republican presidential candidate New Gingrich launched a Super PAC earlier this week. The founder's close ties to a presidential candidate are typical of other presidential super PACs, but that has not stopped political opponents from questioning the connection.
"Both constitutionally and legally, being a supporter of a candidate does not disqualify someone from participating in independent activity or independent expenditures," said Mr. Baran.
