Jan Baran Talks with Diane Rehm About Funding for State Judicial Campaigns
Jan Witold Baran, co-chair of Wiley Rein’s Election Law & Government Ethics Practice, was a featured guest today on NPR’s The Diane Rehm Show, discussing campaign finance issues related to state judicial elections.
Mr. Baran said campaign fundraising can be a challenge for judges, because many voters are more likely to contribute to congressional or gubernatorial candidates. “These judges really have a problem with sufficient funding, and I think that public financing is an alternative that ought to be provided,” he said.
He added that if public funds are made available to state judicial candidates, they should not come with restrictions such as spending limits or a prohibition on accepting voluntary contributions from other sources. To listen to a recording of today’s program, click here.
